Local Thai children from the Phuket Youth Sailing Team are due to set course for adventure thanks to an opportunity to compete in Cape Panwa Phuket Reaceweek 2012 to be held this weekend. Two Phuket-based businesses; Sunsail Thailand and Phuket Island Radio (91.5FM) have come together to provide the Youth Sailing Team with all the necessary supplies.
It’s great to team up and offer a brand new yacht to the Phuket Youth Sailing Team so they can participate in one of Asia’s most exciting regattas. I’m sure they will enjoy the week, learn a great deal and hopefully go on to have successful careers in the marine industry”. says Kevin Quilty, Managing Director of Sunsail Thailand.
The Regatta is organized by Image Asia Events under the auspices of Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC), in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, and is staged under the authority of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).
“This is one of the most exciting community projects we’ve undertaken since the station started in 2008. We’re delighted that Sunsail is joining with us in providing the boat, skipper and other necessary training and equipment to these kids.” says Bryon Jones of 91.5 FM.
The team’s vice president and coach Kathleen (Katy) Gooch was delighted at the announcement saying, :The young sailors are really excited to have this opportunity and are looking forward to the challenge of racing on a 40-foot yacht. Most team members are between 12 and 17 years old and have recently had success in the Phuket Youth Games.” Extract from Phuket Gazette
